Harriet
Harriet has been active in environment and development groups for many year. Her ‘day job’ is as freelance book editor, working from home mainly on biomedical books and journals. She balances the isolation of being freelance by active networking with local green and ethical groups, being involved with the Transition Towns movement, Tatnam Organic Patch, Friends of the Earth, RESULTS UK, Poole Fair Trade group, Resurgence readers group and Poole Agenda 21. Last year she helped to organise the Bournemouth and Poole Big Green Fortnight, which brought together many previously disparate green groups and helped to create the momentum towards greater cooperation and communication between existing green organisations. She is on the Transition BH Hub steering group and a founder member of Transition Town Poole.
PROFILE
Name: Harriet Stewart-Jones
Where I live: Poole, Dorset, UK
What I do:
I am a freelance book editor, working from home mainly on biomedical books and journals, although over the years I have worked on all sorts of subjects from gardening to sociology to nuclear physics. I balance the isolation of being freelance by active networking with local green and ethical groups. I try to keep people informed about green events and activities locally through the Transition BH website events listing and PA21 Green News.
What inspires me: I’m passionate about networking with a purpose. My clearest thoughts come through when I’m walking. Nature inspires me. Urban food production and green spaces is a particular interest. I love canoeing.
Who I look up to and respect:
I have huge respect for Rob Hopkins who founded the Transition Towns movement – he’s such an entertaining writer.
What I’ll be talking about:
Plenty is going on around here in the way of green futures. I’m particularly interested in well-being and how that links with looking after the planet, new economics, practical doable solutions, people’s resistance to change, gardening – the seasons, life, growth, decay and death. Family and everyday life.
What I want for the future:
A cleaner, brighter world in which people take responsibility for looking after the environment and treading lightly on the planet.
